Rev. Tim Trussell-Smith
Tim was born in Kentucky and raised in Tennessee, Arizona, and Georgia. During his childhood, Tim did not attend church, but grew up around writers, teachers, and other trouble-makers, who taught him to be principled, to have integrity, and to stand passionately for whatever he believed in.
When Tim attended Mercer University, a Baptist liberal arts college in Macon, Georgia, he found himself surrounded by thoughtful, rational Christians and confronted by the story of Jesus in a way he had not experienced before. It had not occurred to him before this that his heros — Mahatma Gandhi; Martin Luther King, Jr.; and Mother Teresa; among others — had spoken truth to power because, not in spite, of their belief in God and that each of them had been in some ways particularly inspired by the story of Jesus of Nazareth, confessed to be the Christ. It was through his discovery of the writings of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and C.S. Lewis particularly that Tim became a Christian himself. Tim graduated from Mercer in 2006.
Tim had expressed a sense of call to the ministry in college, but it was not until after his first worship leadership experience — his father’s funeral in 2007 — that he finally applied to seminaries and began his long journey to ordination. Tim enrolled in Andover Newton Theological School (now Andover Newton Seminary at Yale Divinity School) in 2008. While at Andover Newton, Tim expanded his list of Christian heroes to include Barbara Brown Taylor, Howard Thurman, and Mary Luti. Tim graduated from Andover Newton in 2016, and was ordained by First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ - DoC) in Sandersville, Georgia, and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Georgia in 2017.
On the way to becoming a minister, Tim worked as a server, a bartender, an insurance salesperson, a church administrator, a restaurant manager, and a stay-at-home dad, in addition to serving in geographically and theologically diverse ministry settings — Christian Education Director at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Macon, GA; Assistant Director of Appleton Youth Ministries (Episcopal) in Macon, GA; Director of Religious Education at First Parish Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Dorchester, MA; Chapel Intern at Andover Newton Theological School in Newton Centre, MA; Youth and Young Adults Minister at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Del Mar, CA; and Youth Coordinator at First Christian Church (DoC) in Sandersville, GA. Soon after his ordination, Tim accepted his first called ministry as the Senior Minister of First Christian Church (DoC) in Tuscaloosa. He began his ministry with First Christian on November 1, 2017.
Since moving to Tuscaloosa, Tim has served on the Division for Mission of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Alabama—Northwest Florida, participated in The Poor People’s Campaign Moral Mondays in Montgomery, volunteered at the National Convocation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Biennial Session in Birmingham, and connected with other faith leaders in Tuscaloosa and Alabama.
Tim lives in Tuscaloosa with his wife, two daughters, and two cats. He looks forward to deepening his ties at First Christian and in Tuscaloosa as his ministry here continues.
